  Remembering When

In 2006, the Nashville Fire Department adopted the National Fire Protection Association’s Remembering When® Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults. Partnerships have been formed with local agencies to train service providers who care for the elderly in their homes to be on the look out for fire and fall safety issues within each home they visit, and to reinforce key safety messages with their clients. Through this training, caregivers learn to help senior adults to complete a home safety checklist, and inspect for working smoke alarms.

NFD Public Safety educators also “take it to the streets” with entertaining and informative presentations at Nashville’s senior centers, assisted living facilities, and places of worship. Participants are treated to a game show format featuring music, comedy, and door prizes.

Through this dual presentation format, the Nashville Fire Department expects to achieve its goal of reaching the Nashville community with vital lifesaving skills, and significantly reduce fire and fall fatalities and injuries among the high risk elderly population.
