Public Safety Education

Nashville Fire Department

In 2006, the Nashville Fire Department adopted the National Fire Protection Association’s Learn Not To Burn® program. The program teaches children as young as 3 years old fire safety, prevention and survival behaviors.

There are 8 key fire safety behaviors for preschool children. Some of the behaviors consist of safety strategies on matches and lighters, stop, drop and roll, smoke detectors, and escape plans.

In addition, with a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, the department hired three state licensed teachers dedicated to training other teachers and promoting fire safety education throughout the community.

The program has been a success and is now funded as part of the yearly operation budget. We have trained over 2,000 teachers, directors, and daycare providers.

Workshops are held monthly at the Fire Academy and participants earn 3 hours of continuing education credit. To register for a Learn Not To Burn® workshop, please call 615-880-3463.
